To many people around the world, February is the month of love (for me it is the month of pancakes). Whether you are celebrating romantic love, love between friends, familial love, self-love, the love of a good pet or not celebrating at all, it is impossible to ignore Valentine’s Day in all its glory.
Personally I have never really been a fan and would rather celebrate love all year round.
With that being said I happened upon an article about a German city called Kissing and decided to find the most romantic place names around the world.
Romance – USA
The United States has four cities named Romance in Wisconsin, West Virginia, Missouri and Arkansas.
There is also a Romance in Eastern Cape, South Africa and La Romana, Dominican Republic.
Love – USA
Who wouldn’t enjoy being in Love?! If visiting the United States and want to be in Love you have a few options to choose from; Virginia, Texas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Illinois or Arizona.
Valentine – USA

The US is once again showing its love of place name repetition. Texas, South Carolina, New Jersey, Nebraska, Montana, Louisiana, Indiana, Arkansas, Arizona and Alabama are all home to Valentine. Plus two cities in France; Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur and Midi-Pyrenees.
Loving – New Mexico – USA
Loving is a small village of around 2500 residents in New Mexico. It was originally named Vaud by Swiss settlers in 1891 and was later renamed in honour of Oliver Loving; a cattle baron.
Climax – USA
Surprisingly 16 different US states have their very own Climax! If you’re looking for one of these cheekily named places you can find them in Georgia, Washington, Virginia, Texas, South Caroline, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Ohio, North Carolina, New York, Minnesota, Michigan, Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa or Colorado.
Cupids, Heart’s Content and Heart’s Desire – Newfoundland and Labrador – Canada

Newfoundland and Labrador are definitely coming in with some of my favourite names. These three towns each have teeny populations which I would imagine adds a real intimate feel to the residents. Of note Cupids is located on Conception Bay.
Love County – Oklahoma – USA
According to the Oklahoma Historical Society website, Love County was originally known as Recording District Number 26 but was renamed after Overton Love in 1906. Love was a Chickasaw who came to the area from Mississippi and became one of the largest land owners from the Chickasaw tribe. He then went on to serve as a judge of his county and district and the county was renamed in his honour after his death in 1906.
Recording District Number 26 just doesn’t roll off the tongue as well as Love County.
Lover – Wiltshire – UK
Lover is a small village in Wiltshire close to the border of Hampshire. The village became popular when people would visit to send their Valentine’s cards meaning the postmark would say “Lover”. The Lover Community Trust have also stamped and sent more than 8000 cards and letters with “Sent From Lover”.
Casanova
Giacomo Girolamo Casanova – the most famous ladies man that ever did exist. One of Venice’s most infamous children lends his name to the Italian town of Civitella Casanova and a small unincorporated community in Fauquier County, Virginia, USA.
Imagine a love themed American road trip! Have you visited any of these places? Do you have any more to add to this list?
Once you’ve celebrated Valentines Day, head over here for Halloween!

I really like the idea of the postal mark from Lover in Wiltshire, UK; it’s such a nice little touch to a Valentine’s Day card!
I had no idea there were so many places named in some way connected to romance, what a really fun thing to look at. I think I love to read about someone travelling to all of these!
Isn’t it lovely! I really enjoyed finding out about these places.
Well, I’ve learned a lot from this post, especially that there are 16 cities in the US called Climax! x

I love place names, makes you wonder why some of them were named like they are.
Definitely makes you think!
